Hi Charles,
Depends on what you mean by "in service". There were many into the
Conrail era in work service and such, a quick check of a couple books showed
several in 1974. I'm guessing you mean actually carrying revenue freight
though. There were some still in service into the 60's. In Mail and Express
service they were around until at least the end of the PRR in 1968. Be careful
of any roster lists that list X29b's though. They were a class of rebuilds
where the PRR basically jacked up the number and built a new car under it.
