The GP7 was taken apart about 2 weeks ago without much progress. I decided
to do some fiddling today. There were 2 complete sets of Ajin axle gearboxes
from an Overland F Unit in my parts box. If I had known the swap out from
the Sunset rubber band drive to this would have been SO EASY this GP7 would
be DONE and on my layout years ago! It is as close to a direct swap out as I
have ever seen. There are NO modifications to the GP needed – at least to
get the new axles in. But the advantage is these wheels are in gauge! The
Sagami was also in my motor parts box taken from a brass RS3 drive. As much
as I tried to make it more complex the simplest kept coming back as what was
best.

I know some have stuffed American Models drives in them. So far this is the
direction I am going. I have to cobble together some drive shafts next.

I had some ¼” brass bar I made a spacer/motor mount. I milled it a little to
get the motor shafts and tower shafts at the same height. I am going to
fiddle with the a bit more to give it some vibration insulation. It is
probably going back in the box for a while as a roughed in but running
drive. I have to add extra pickups and antennas. BOOM – paint that thing!

It is going to be PRR 8553 that ran in PRSL Service.

Thank You,
Bill Lane
