My wife just reminded me of a true story I told her about that happened
about 1990. Since today is our 11th anniversary this was B D or well before
Donna.

Roy Hoffman may have been a cohort in this caper. I think there was 5 of us.
Back in the days of the South Jersey S Scalers a schedule of “play trains”
was established. Since the regular meetings were BUSINESS meetings it seemed
at times trains were almost not discussed so some guys wanted a night out to
run trains without the business. Only a few guys had layouts so they got
heavy rotation.

Let me briefly tell you about Al Schoneberg. Let’s just say he was
“different”. He was a regular working class guy that mostly liked American
Flyer. Some of me eventually rubbed off because he started to buy some brass
too in the end. Al did not mind paying big bucks for some rare A F pieces.
But the “different” thing was NOTHING was allowed to ever be in a box. He
would buy it and put it on the layout. After not to long the layout was full
and an honest true pile/heap of trains was started. $850.00 for an A F tank
car and throw it on the pile! The brass met a worse fate when the sewer pipe
broke and dumped doody all over the Big Boy and N&W A.

SO- it was Play Trains night at Al’s. I had not been there for a while so
whatever – I went. I was not completely sure where Al lived so we met at the
nearby school. 5 guys 5 cars - follow Ken Davis – he goes to Al’s a lot. We
park, walk down the driveway to the back door. I am 3rd in line. No
knocking, the door is not locked – Al is expecting us. In the house and down
the steps we go. I thought - good Al cleaned up the kitchen for us. I am
standing at the top of the steps with 2 people blocking right behind me. I
hear the TV on in the living room and someone cough. Ken gets 2/3 of the way
down the steps and says where is the layout? I looked down - WHAT?

We were in the wrong house! Then we were all trying to quietly get out of
this house as FAST as possible. Whosever house it was never saw or heard us.
It took at least ½ hour before we laughed about it.

Thank You,
Bill Lane
