All,

I finally received my Dispatch last night. It's a much improved issue
from a photography point of view. In the photo to print process it's
pretty easy for things to go sour and more difficult to actually make an
image better without enormous intervention. In this case if you have
good stuff to start with the printer was able to hold quality very
well. Good job all. (from the retired Dispatch photo guy).

BTW, the latest issue of the NMRA magazine has a very good article on
photographing your model RR. Although I haven't read it thoroughly,
some of the techniques are on the cutting edge--some that I've used on
the last three layouts I've had the privilege of covering.

One of the benefits of doing photography is as the layout progresses, is
discovering what needs to be done to enhance the layout as you build and
fine-tune things. It's one thing to view a layout on a tour and be
impressed, or to be happy with our own construction. Next take a photo
and study it several times for possible improvements. We have that
advantage 'cause things don't move away--we can make changes as we see
the need. One case with this article is a shot of a streamlined Milw
engine emerging from a tunnel toward camera. One thing I noticed was
the lack of coal/oil stains on the tunnel portal--something I'm sure the
modeler/photographer saw immediately. Another thing photo wise with the
same shot is the lack of smoke in the portal area itself. He has a very
nice plum of smoke from the stack, but one would expect that tunnel to
be bursting with smoke also. I've seen clouds of diesel exhaust around
these portals and I would expect to see even more with a steam engine.
But still overall a very worthwhile article.
