Having been brought up a half century ago (sigh), I remember well the
first sniffs of the delicious fragrance of that little red tube
of "smoke fluid" that my father placed into the waiting chimney of
our American Flyer locomotive.
Very carefully he slit the top of the elongated nozzle and delicately
squeezed the contents of the little red tube into the awaiting
locomotive, poured through a tiny little aluminum funnel so as to not
waste a single drop.
Then the power was switched on with the big red lever on the even
bigger black box, and then............the engine magically began to
puff and huff just like a real steam engine!!~!
What a marvel it was! Just watching the locomotive go round and
round the tree endlessly puffing smoke!!!
Yes, wonderful memories they were!
The smell of the engines smoke struck a sensous delight into my
little soul.
Now, here I am. Many years later. Longing for just one small
whiff of that wonderful scent that emanated from the locomotives
chimney those many years ago.
Realizing that A.C. Gilbert and his factories are long in the
past I still had the need to smell the sweet smoke scent I had known
in my youth.
The old engine did still puff but ever so slightly with that
fine smoke aroma. I needed to find a refuel for the chimney so I
could savor that sweet smoke scent once more.
I tried many of the commercial available scents I could purchase
off Ebay.
Some were oh so sweet smelling, some reeked of cedar oil, some
smelled like a cross between Liquid Wrench and 3'in'one oil!!!!
I realize that the little original red tubes of American Flyer
smoke fluid are either consumned or have become gel in any tubes that
remain.
But........I still cannot find a smoke fluid on ebay that is
reminescent of the original smell of my youth. Sure, the new stuff
smells like cedar, but it is a bit too much cedar. Something is
missing in the latest American Flyer replacement Smoke Fluids. They
are similar, but there is something missing from the scent of the
newer stuff.
Can anyone point to a supply of really original American Flyer
Smoke Fluid???
Thanks very much, Mikey.
