As an alternative to installing diodes to reduce voltage to switch lamps (or lamps anywhere on your layout), you can also use 24-volt bulbs, instead of the usual 18-volt bulbs. This will have the same effect----a little dimmer, but much longer life. We stock 24-volt bulbs that match the 1447 switch lamp bulbs, the red and green switch-control bulbs, and the 432 large-globe bulbs used in passenger cars, cabeese, stations, etc.
