Cheers,
Yabo Capacitors and Transient Suppressors reduce the inductive kickback from any kind of coil when the current through the coil is interrupted. The interruption happens when you open the switch feeding the coil. There is another phenomena called switch bounce that causes wear and tear on any switch used to control a coil. When you try to open or close a switch the switch bounces open and closed quite a few times before finally becoming a good contact. During the time when the switch opens the voltage across the coil will rise as high as needed to cause the current to continue flowing. This current must continue across the switch thus causing arcing. By placing a capacitor or transient suppressor across the coil the current has some where to go other that as an arc across the switch contact. None of this discussion has anything to do with increasing the LIFE of a coil as the life of a coil is usually dependent upon how hot it gets and good the varnish is on the magnet wire. I have always thought the AF motors would benefit from transient suppressors across the commentator segments. Maybe one of these days I will try this. Robert E.
