Interesting questions indeed. What I will do is collect all the
observations and queries from the varied list members that reply
re:the supression issue and produce a small synopsis of my ideas and
efforts toward quenching rf noise (my current specialty) that my
Uncle Mikes fellow list members may find of help with their trains. I
will provide it to the list for further inspection and scrutiny. I
will place my findings after the 4th holiday as these past few days
with family are consuming all my time. Most likely when I next see
Uncle Mike two weeks hence with his reworked switches. I may also
join the list.

However, you are quite correct about the transients not harming the
magnet wire, my concern is 50+ year old wire where the varnish has
become compromised, that is why I am trying supression to possibly
make these units continue to function for another 50 years without
needing a rewind and adding a part or parts that are easily removable
to retain the originality of the valued AF working equipment (some of
the coils I have seen on Uncle Mikes equipment appear marginal at
best as a result of time/attic storage/condensation and usage heat).
Also, Uncle Mike has chastised me for being so arrogant in my list
postings. Subtlety is not one of my finer qualities. Sorry. Alan.
