RFG,
Well, those instructions are fine, given a pristine truck that doesn't
have anything else wrong with it. Unfortunately, few of us have trucks in
that condition, by now they have been bent, tweaked, twisted, etc. <Warning,
blatant plug follows> I wrote a "Fixin' Flyer" article in the NASG Dispatch
a while back on just this subject. Just like the real trains, our trains
require truck maintenance and alignment. Both axles must be parallel in both
planes, the Bolster area must be "square" with the truck sideframes, and
THEN the coupler must be adjusted for proper coupling, and clearance from
the railhead.
