Before anyone tries switching split chassis axles with regular production,
there IS a difference (sorry Tom, you were probably thinking about that
Futon when you posted!)
The split chassis drive axles are not stepped like the regular production
ones are (regular production axles are larger in diameter on one side of the
gear splining). The wheel splined area is the same on all the axles, though,
so you could put plastic drive wheels on the earlier axles, and vice-versa.
    I would change out the axle, as the splines must be at least worn. If
you change out wheels and tires, be aware that there are two different
diameter drive wheels, and the difference is in the flanged tire. They are
(basically) pre-pullmor and pullmor.
