Flyer fans,
My first American Flyer arrived 54 years ago on Christmas morning
1948. It was a New York Central Hudson freight outfit bearing
locomotive number 322. It had a Missouri Pacific cattle car, floodlight
car, another car type unknown (54 years is a long time), and a Reading
caboose. Since I always awoke early on Christmas morning in those days,
my dad and one of his employees were just putting the last sections of
track into the oval as I descended the stairs and looked into the living
room that morning. My dad bought Schuylkill Haven (PA) Cab Company in
the spring of 1948 and left his employment at the Reading Locomotive
Shop in Reading, PA in early summer of the same year. At 11 years of
age I was looking forward to A.C. Gilbert trains for a long time.
The next year saw a 322AC Hudson with red New Haven coaches and an
operating mail car. But throughout the years the 322 has always
remained my favorite. My dad would be 100 on 16 January of 2003, but I
will never forget that morning and still can see him putting the final
track sections together.
As we here in Orwigsburg, PA dig out from our white Christmas, I
want to thank John and Phil for sharing their "first" Flyer stories.
