PA Nilsson - this is not s3ql related. I hope it's okay that I reply. 
In the past I've used things like kfsmd to monitor (but actually had more 
luck with *auditctl *) when the kernel modifies a file or folder it writes 
to a log. Might help you see what's going on. Hope you get it figured out.
