Hi Jared,

When replying to emails on this list, please do not put your reply
above the quoted text, and do not quote the entire message you're
answering to. This makes it unnecessarily hard for other readers to
understand the context of your email. Instead, please cut quoted parts
that are not relevant to your reply, and insert your responses right
after the points you're replying to (as I have done below). Thanks!

Apologies, that was actually wrong advice. You should be able to upgrade
directly from 1.12 to 2.9.

(I assume you mean 1.12 in the last line).

That is odd. I tried to reproduce this on my system, but it seems that
S3QL 1.12 isn't compatible with the more recent rest of my system
anymore. The earliest version of S3QL I can run is 1.15, and when
creating a file system with that version it can be upgraded to 2.9 just
fine.

Could you try to create a new (encrypted) file system with 1.12, and try
to upgrade that to 2.9? There's no need to mount it or copy anything
into it, just run 1.12's mkfs.s3ql followed by 2.9's s3qladm upgrade.

Best,
-Nikolaus
