You are quite right; the new SuSE install defaulted to btrfs which it seems 
does not play well with vmware disk shrinking: the net result was that the 
file system was, by some measure, 'full' and unable to allocate more 
metadata space. 

After rebalancing the btrfs mount point, it passes all tests.
