Thanks Nikolaus for the speedy response as always.  Network and backend 
changes are not really an option for us at the moment (we're using and VM 
and Object St IBM's Softlayer) - but I've increased the tcp-timeout on the 
mount.s3ql command from the default 20 seconds to 60 seconds.  We'll update 
the thread if this works okay for us.  

mount.s3ql --allow-other --backend-options tcp-timeout=60 swift:
//<backend_url>
