Wanted to post an update for the thread and if anyone else runs into this 
issue.  Thanks so much to Daniel Jagszent for the pointer in the right 
direction.  Turns out he was right and running an update on cert bundle 
fixed the problem.  On Ubuntu run the following to resolve:

sudo apt-get update

then run

sudo apt-get install ca-certificates


Thanks again Daniel and hope this helps someone else as well.
