*13 APRIL 2011 * * * *The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) on the Uprisings in Swaziland * The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has pledged its support to the teachers and the workers of Swaziland who are campaigning for democracy in their country. We urge the people of Swaziland not to allow their spirits to be dampened by the threats and intimidation but to continue with the struggle to liberate themselves from the shackles of the autocratic, oppressive monarchy which is bankrupting state coffers with its luxurious lifestyle in a country beset by poverty, hunger and HIV Further, we condemn the Swazi government for the arrests, brutal response and the beating of their own people. We demand a just and civil response to the people’s demands. No amount of intimidation and brutality will deter the people from pursuing democracy. We further call upon SADC and AU you put pressure on the monarchy to release all the activists and leaders arrested during the peaceful demonstration.
