Nepal:

Fuel Deal with China Set to Break Indian Stranglehold

The Morning Star, London, 30 October 2015

Nepal announced an agreement to import petrol, diesel and cooking gas from
China yesterday, breaking India's stranglehold on the Himalayan nation.

Nepal Oil Corporation official Deepak Baral said that the crucial deal had
been signed on Wednesday by a team of diplomats and other officials sent to
Beijing earlier this week.

While the final details concerning quantities and prices have yet to be
decided, Mr Baral said that the supplies would be provided on a regular
basis.

India has stopped fuel tankers and other goods lorries from crossing the
border since last month, claiming that drivers are in danger from protesters
opposed to the country's new secular republican constitution.

An Indian Oil Corporation official claimed that fuel supplies were moving
again at a rate of 35 to 40 per cent of the normal 100,000 tons per month.

Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup declined to comment
on Nepal's agreement with China.
