*KING MSWATI URGES NATION TO SWEEP ISSUES UNDER THE RUG*
SSN –STATEMENT: 04TH August, 2016 Wasting the nation’s valuable time, the king of Swaziland called a national meeting at the Royal headquarters where he implicitly told the nation to ensure that the forth coming Southern African Development Community summit would be held in a tranquil atmosphere, devoid of any protest. In an unrehearsed speech replete with innuendo, the continent’s last absolute monarchy told his staunch followers that they should help him weed out “thorns” that may present the nation as being anything but united and democratic. There is no doubt that he is referring to the country’s labour formations which have called upon the nation to effectively shut down the SADC summit. Without referring to these labour formations by name, the king went further to express his disappointment that the country is perennially under scrutiny internationally as the country’s government becomes exposed for its lack of respect for human rights. He then left his followers to vent in what is styled as the “People’s parliament”. The purpose of the meeting was to effectively pave the way for a successful SADC summit where any kind of protest would embarrass the king as the host and soon to be chairperson of the regional body. He was therefore begging his detractors to keep their protestations under the proverbial rug and not act in any way he and his supporters describe as “disrespectful”. The Swaziland Solidarity Network [SSN] urges the Mass Democratic Movement and its international allies to ensure that the SADC summit is anything but peaceful. King Mswati must be exposed for the brutal dictator that he is. For over a decade the people of Swaziland have been lobbying that the SADC to put pressure of the Swazi head of state to embrace democracy and respect people’s rights. All these attempts have been in vain. Instead they now aim to come and crown their little dictator as their chairperson in front of his oppressed citizens. The time for sweeping issues under the rug is long over.
