SWAZILAND ON THE BRINK OF A FULL SCALE REVOLT AS HEAVY GOVERNMENT TACTICS
BACKFIRE.

SSN STATEMENT: 27 JUNE 2021.

Another day in the tiny kingdom has brought news of police brutality and an
increasingly militant populace. More than 10 different constituencies
boldly defied the government’s orders on Saturday the 26th of June.
In all these constituencies a heavy police contingent forcefully disrupted
the marches, resulting in protestors being shot at and injured in the
process. The most violent protests occurred at Siphofaneni where police
once again retreated immediately after infuriating the local population. In
the aftermath of that clash the road passing though the town was completely
closed as trucks were burnt. This was eerily similar to what occurred at
Msunduza the previous day.

It is clear from this pattern of action that the police in the country are
either simply fed up with their superiors or are deliberately being
negligent as part of a plan to receive back up from the army. While we urge
the protestors to be extra vigilant of agent provocateurs, we wish to
highlight to the government of the country that this increased militancy is
a direct response to their own mishandling of the situation.

The people of the country have set a straight forward plan of engaging the
government. The delivery of petitions is the first step. The government has
been given until the end of July to respond to all demands contained in the
petitions, failing which the constituencies would then deliver the same
petitions to the Regional Administrators. After Regional action the people
will unite by taking their grievances to the national government. Failure
by the national government to accede to these demands will lead the people
to make the country totally ungovernable until their demands are met.

By declaring that this program of action is not procedural, and brutally
crushing it, the government has only fanned the flames of what is gradually
becoming a nationwide revolt.

We once again urge the international community to put pressure on the king
to respond to the people’s wishes and seek mediation if need be. The very
last thing that this continent needs is a full scale revolt that could have
been easily everted.
