empathy is in active development now and the pace of the development is astounding. It should be ready by the time karmic launches. while pidgin only allows video conferencing through xmpp (gtalk), empathy does that and video conferencing with the MSN protocol now as well. Also thanks to empathy's tubes you can do things like share your desktop or your music with a contact.
