Well, it seems a general trend to keep vlc, so I withdraw my suggestion. Although I disagree with you about what vlc can do & totem (or generally GStreamer) cannot. I'm not very sure about totem, but GStreamer framework can convert, record , open network stream (& I think also broadcast streams on a network).
