How do I print currency symbols?

I would like to use

<xsl:output method="text/>

I have tried:

<xsl:text>&#xA3;</xsl:text>

For pounds sterling?

But I get an A with ^ on top AND a pound sign.

Sorry I don't know what a A with ^ is called,
I am English, we don't use that character.

Also, how do I print the Euro Symbol?
