This new personalized utilization of the media allowed individuals to exploit all the affordances of the WWW medium leading to the rise of new phenomena such as Twitter journalism. Where there are benefits to such mediums there are also risks that are posed by control and distortion of information. The persistence and spreading of the Arab spring suggests that emergent self-driven reporting activity will eventually prevail over powers to control.
