Now I'm equally perplexed. I can't reproduce the behavior on my machine now. I'm using
sage: version() 'SAGE Version 1.5-alpha5, Build Date: 2006-11-25' on a sightly older 12 inch PowerBook G4 running OS X Tiger. When I go back and try everything over again, I get the eigenspaces to work and True for questions like GF(2).is_field().
