I think your design is definitely a big improvement, but there are some things that I don't really like as they are now, and imho make it a little messy. The wall paper, for instance. Second, the "Try SAGE Online" box is stuck to the side of the screen. It would be better if there would be some space to the right of the box. Also the screen shots could use a little breathing space between them. Finally, I think you're using too many different colors. It's better to choose a certain color scheme and stick to it.
Don't get me wrong, I think it is a very good start and this is all just my opinion.
