I'd propose getting a number of fast internal hard drives for the machine, 
rather than abusing those LaCie disks -- they're really good for storage, but I 
think that they create a pretty significant bottleneck during computations that 
write to disk.  (I cannot substantiate this claim)

I mean, hey.  Memory is great.  But buying more memory doesn't solve a leakage 
problem -- if Apache is eating all the memory on the machine, and you double 
the memory... then it will happily eat all of that, too.
