Even though I'm finishing up my masters degree in Information Technology, I prefer using Linux over any MS Windows OS. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of NC at Asheville in 1975, and have always been fond of Mathematics, trying to keep as current as possible whenever I can. I have been accepted at Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota to start my PhD program in the spring. I hope to have my PhD in IT Education by 2011. As you might guess, I've been a big fan of Mathematica, but never had the big bucks to obtain a copy of this commercial software. Until I recently viewed the colloquium on SAGE, I thought that I would never have the opportunity to experiment with a complex, yet simple-to-use piece of mathematics software. I have been a big fan of Linux for years, and more recently have installed Ubuntu Linux 7.10 "Gusty Gibbon" on my personal laptop, replacing the MS Windows XP that used to occupy my hard drive. Also, I have always been a big proponent of GNU/PL software and the "open source" mantra. My purpose for writing you is that I recently viewed a video online of Dr. Stein delivering a colloquium at UW wherein he presented and discussed the development of and future course of SAGE. I was so thrilled and enthusiastic about SAGE that I just had to have it. Therefore, I downloaded the souce code in Ubuntu LInux 7.10, and compiled SAGE, which took about 2 hours, 53 minutes. It was well worth it. I'm currently running SAGE on my Ubuntu laptop and wanted to let you know that I've never been more impressed with an open-source product in my life. To be able to create a notebook that one can share with others across the Internet, such as my identical twin, who has his masters in Mathematics, and who is also running SAGE on his Ubuntu desktop, is extraordinary. Thank you both for your hard work and dedication to the "open source" community in developing and guiding others to assist in the creation of such a marvelous software package as SAGE. I look forward to future upgrades and improvements.
