Updated gcc, g++ to 4.2.1. Still failed to build linbox due to gcc internal error, same as with the 4.1.3. I'll continue to try with yet newer versions of gcc.
In the meantime, I did get a successful build on another system (Intel Core 2 Quad) with Ubuntu 7.10 and gcc/g++ 4.2.1. So I have a place to experiment with sage. Thanks.
