In my opinion this is not over-engineered. This is the canonical way to do this sort of thing. whole-heartedly support this style and wish it was in place in other areas, such as the production of latex output. I cannot comment on the details of the implementation because no doubt there will be tricky issues of ordering and variable names. Nick PS. I also cannot say whether or not this is "OpenMath". PPS.
