One concern mentioned in the other thread was that some Spam filters
refuse a mail if more than 50% of the contents are comments. I don't
know what gmail does, and i don't receive the threads by e-mail, but i
think this is a valid concern.

I think so, for the following reason.

One might think that it is all fine since the quoted text is hidden,
and if you really want to read it, you can simply click it. However,
you would see the *whole* old text -- including those parts that are
not being responded.

And now imagine an answer to an answer to an answer. It would be quite
time consuming to find out which tiny part of a long text with nested
comments is relevant for the answer.

Hence, deleting unneeded portions helps the reader.
