Debian and many other distributions require sonames. So it is more
than "useful", it is mandated in those cases :)

Well, Tim and many other people believe that the only solution here is
autotools, but I certainly disagree. You picked a python script to
write a makefile, so it can be easily enough worked around by
providing a library build target that honors Debian's policy, i.e.
sonames and an install target that creates the proper links. Then just
leave the plain old version that we is there already so that Sage for
example can use that.
