Any objections to creating or editing a text cell on a shift-click? In other words, when the "new cell" line appears, shift-click will create a text cell. Shift-clicking on a text cell will make it available for in-place editing. A keyboard modifier seems okay since you'll generally starting writing text in the cell immediately anyway.
