Is there anything in Sage that needs gcc 4.3.0 or later, or will the
previous release (4.2.4) be ok?

I've built about 8 versions of gcc on 't2', which is a Sun T5240

http://www.sun.com/servers/coolthreads/t5240/

'coolthreads' machine with a pair of UltraSPARC T2 Plus processors (16
cores and 128 hardware threads in total).

The results of the MPFR test suite on this machine are interesting, as
it depends on the version of gcc used.

gcc-3.4.3 : 0 MPFR failures
gcc-4.1.1 : 0 MPFR failures
gcc-4.2.1 : 0 MPFR failures
gcc-4.2.4 : 0 MPFR failures
gcc-4.3.0 : gcc 4.3.0 builds, but will not install for me.
gcc-4.3.1 : 20 MPFR failures
gcc-4.3.3 : 20 MPFR failures
gcc-4.4.0 : 20 MPFR failures

Hence the latest which I can get to work with mpfr on 't2' is gcc 4.2.4.

I get no such problems on my own machine, a Sun Blade 2000, which has a
couple of UltraSPARC II processors. On my own Sun Blade 2000, all MPFR
tests pass with any recent(ish) gcc version I have checked, including
the latest gcc 4.4.0.
