It appears that the next version of matplotlib supports an even easier way to have axes in that cross in the middle of the picture at the origin. See http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/examples/axes_grid/simple_axisline2.html I'm posting this since multiple people have touched this code in Sage, and might be interested in looking at a soon-to-be-native way to do it in matplotlib.
