Thanks for your help.  I now have Sage compiled and installed.  I do
have a different problem - but this one anyway is solved.

If I just used 'configure' the install system guessed 'ABI=amd64'.
>From the clue above I instead used 'configure ABI=64' and it worked.

Here is my cpuinfo if it might prove useful in figuring out why the
install guessed 'amd64' instead of '64'.
