For those wondering, here is how to make such a keyword search, 
following the instructions at 
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_keyword_searches:

1. Go to the address given above (with the %s still in it): 
http://groups.google.com/groups/search?q=%s&sitesearch=&as_q=group:sage-devel

2. Make a bookmark from the resulting page.

3. Edit the bookmark and give it a keyword (I used "sd").  If editing 
the bookmark in

4. Now just type your keyword into the *address* bar (not the search box 
on the left) and the terms you want searched.  To find the post I 
mention earlier, just type:

sd wysiwyg mathematics

and it comes up as the first hit.
