It seems that for some reason this puppy is not using either
'/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules' nor the older '/etc/iftab'
method to ensure that eth0 and eth1 refer to the same interfaces
across re-boots.  Unless something specific is done Linux does not
guarantee how ethernet adapters are named. On the other hand the
'/sage/puppy/notify-eth' is calling 'ifconfig eth1' in order to
retrieve the ip address.

So if it really is necessary to generate such notices then something
is missing from this distribution.  I am not sure yet what needs to be
added - maybe some more udev support of some kind?
