Thanks for your suggestions. It turns out that even the last working Maxima on that machine (5.16) doesn't build anymore on ECL-9.8. So the problem is with ECL (or GCC, which has also been upgraded). I'll let you know if I'm unable to resolve this by using either an older or newer ECL or GCC.
