In progress.

For info: the patches apply smoothly on 4.2.1 alpha0.

There are a couple small doctest failing, which I am going to handle now.

Thanks for your support!

No worry about my motivation for finalizing this. The batch of patches
that is going to be merged in weights 40k lines / 1.4Mb of code. Not
counting the following pile ... I can't wait until we are finally done
maintaining them :-)
