A binary would be nice but it will definitely need to be maintained by people inside Gentoo. Note that some efforts as picked up to put sage in Gentoo again in "split fashion", may be we'll go further this time. "Partial splitting" (ie giving most of the non-python stuff to the system and the rest to the sage build system) causes headaches on 64 bits but seems to more or less work on 32 bits.
