I noticed a problem building sage 4.3.1.alpha1 on 't2' which I think is new.
GCC is saying the flags are incorrect when compiling

Is this related?

Yep, that looks like it.
Nathann Cohen, who reported that, was using gcc 4.3.2 on Fedora Linux, where the
error message from gcc is not very informative.
On the Sun T5240, on which I'm using gcc 4.4.1, the error message is a bit more
informative. Full details on the trac ticket I created
http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/7867
but the basic ending is this:
/usr/local/gcc-4.4.1-sun-linker/bin/../lib/gcc/sparc-sun-solaris2.10/4.4.1/include-fixed/sys/feature_tests.h:341:2:
error: #error "Compiler or options invalid for pre-UNIX 03 X/Open applications
and pre-2001 POSIX applications"
