What about this: we make a PPA of the binary and just direct everyone to that. That way, there is a one-step, distribution-supported avenue for getting an up-to-date Sage. At least, this might be a very easy stop-gap measure, if someone knows how to make a PPA.

Then maybe we could print a big warning for the sagemath 3.0.5 installation procedure that says the user really should use the PPA.
