Just one thought: problems may arise with libraries which are used by both the R binary and certain other binaries from Sage. E.g. "iconv" comes to my mind. Probably one has to invest a greater-than-normal amount of care (w.r.t. environment variable settings and such), to ensure that R *as well as the libraries it dependends on* is built "entirely" with Sun CC, and that the Sage dependencies are built with GCC. Maybe this means even that certain libraries have to built in two versions, I don't know.
