Is there any reason to suggest that would be any different for MATLAB?
I personally believe that Mathematica is the harder of the two systems
to get to grips with, though as with any non-trivial program, the
learning curves are a bit steep, though I'd say Mathematica's is
steeper.

There are plenty of jobs specifically requiring MATLAB skills, but not
that many mentioning Mathematica.

The only conclusion I can logically come to is that Mathematica is not
widely used in industry, since if it was, there would be more jobs
mentioning Mathematica.
