In my experience most users, especially those drawing a lot of plots,
tend to use the notebook (though not necessarily exclusively).

How about some concrete timings (to realize how much of an impact this
would have)? I would be more OK with a patch that just doesn't impact
the notebook (it's not just about communication speed, but also screen
real-estate).
