Another option is to make the preparser recognize syntax like:

[1 2 3; 4 5 6; 7 8 9]

or even

[A B; C D]

for making a matrix by stacking and concatenating matrices.

I don't know how strong of a case we could make for such a preparser change, though. It'd have to have lots of support before it would even be considered seriously.
