I use terminal windows of different width (though at least 80
columns), and hence would prefer a *short* prompt, on a *single* line,
as well.

The Sage subshell prompt will (currently) almost always differ from
the user's default one (even the second line).

Shortening Sage's and perhaps appending just e.g. "sage>" would IMHO
suffice.

[And please: No color prompts or the like by default!  We could
support SAGE_SHELL_PROMPT or similar, which of course would depend on
the shell, so maybe SAGE_BASH_PROMPT etc.  If we had that, I could
live with having some ugly longer prompt by default, i.e., if
SAGE_BASH_PROMPT isn't set.]
