That isn't exactly true. It was separate and working well separate a year ago. I don't know if somehow somebody did something to make it suddenly not work separately again though, but if so, it would be much easier to fix that accidental oversight than to write it all from scratch.
As far as I know, there are a few sage.misc functions imported, but I think that's probably it.
