If I understand the implications of GPL, you are free to create another
program, perhaps calling it Mathxy, and import all the code from Sage into
it, as long as it too is GPL. 

Also, if someone (William, perhaps)  decided to change the name to Mathxy,
 you could create another program, calling it Sage and import all the code 
from
Mathxy.

Such things have happened: 
The Axiom system exists in two forms (at least): OpenAxiom and FriCAS. 

I repeat, I am not a lawyer, and any opinion I might have about trademark 
etc
might be quite irrelevant to legal reality.
